License & Documents Needed to Rent a Car in Japan (For Foreign Visitors)

Exactly What Documents You Need — and How to Avoid Rental Problems

Renting a car in Japan is straightforward once you have the correct documents.
However, missing or incorrect paperwork is one of the most common reasons foreign visitors are denied rental service.

This guide explains exactly which licenses and documents you need, how they differ by country, and how to avoid problems at the rental counter.

Required Documents for Foreign Drivers

To legally rent and drive a car in Japan, you must present all of the following:

  • A valid passport
  • A valid driver’s license issued in your home country
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) or a Japanese translation of your license (depending on country)

All documents must be original. Copies or digital images are not accepted.

International Driving Permit (IDP): Who Needs One?

Most foreign visitors must carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention.

This applies to drivers from countries such as:

  • United States
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • United Kingdom
  • Most European countries

Important notes:

  • The IDP must be obtained before arriving in Japan
  • Japan does not accept IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention
  • IDPs cannot be issued, renewed, or replaced inside Japan

If your IDP is missing, expired, or issued under the wrong convention, you will not be allowed to rent a car.

Countries That Do Not Need an IDP

Drivers from the following countries do not use an IDP, but instead must carry a Japanese translation of their driver’s license:

  • Germany
  • France
  • Switzerland
  • Belgium
  • Monaco
  • Taiwan

The Japanese translation must be issued by:

  • The Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), or
  • An officially authorized organization (for Taiwan)

Embassy translations or unofficial translations are not accepted.

How Long Can Foreigners Drive in Japan?

Foreign visitors can legally drive in Japan for up to one year from the date of entry.

Important restrictions:

  • Leaving Japan and re-entering does not reset the one-year limit
  • Long-term residents must switch to a Japanese driver’s license

Rental companies strictly follow these rules.

Additional Documents Rental Companies May Require

Some rental companies may also ask for:

  • A credit card in the driver’s name
  • A valid contact address or hotel information
  • Proof of return flight (rare, but possible)

Requirements vary slightly by company, but license rules are non-negotiable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Foreign drivers are often denied rentals due to:

  • Bringing an IDP issued under the wrong convention
  • Forgetting the Japanese license translation
  • Presenting expired licenses
  • Assuming digital documents are accepted

Checking your documents before departure prevents all of these issues.
